Eric's Manifesto

Wordle: Manifesto

·        Loyalty to my students devoting myself to their education, creating a multicultural environment they can trust in.

·        Duty to push them every day by raising educational goals and standards expected every day, mastering concepts faster every time.

·        Respect the child’s parents, by asking for permission and signing documents that legally allow for the classroom to be recorded for reflection purposes.

·        Selfless service by spending hours on end researching new methods and lessons to use for my own instruction

·        Honor to carry out and live up to these values and manifesto every day, thus taking one step forward as an educator and person to become the best that I can be.

·        Integrity by posting average test score compared to state, and needed average to surpass official commended status on standardized tests.

·        Personal courage to ask others for information on grants available to apply for, in order to raise funding for better equipment in the educational environment, therefore enhancing education itself.

VoiceThread

After using Voice Thread as something to experiment with, I am very certain it has a great amount of value, and the potential to have a long list of amount of uses. The first thought that comes when using this application for teaching purposes, is to create an educational video by the students perspective teacher. Not only would the Teacher have the ability to fill the video with information that they choose and want, but it would allow their students to view the video at their own pace. I didn’t think of this method until it was presented to the class, but it make clear and perfect sense to use it, having the student themselves create the video on something they learned. This give the students the power to create a lesson they just recently, giving the student deeper comprehension by teaching and explaining it themselves, increased motivation to learn the lesson, and the teacher would have a new way to assess how much the student learned.

Bilingual Education In Spain

I was asked to research on countries' bilingual education system. The article that I found helped me realize the importance of bilingual education for the United States and other countries. Today a person who is fluent in two or more languages is able to communicate internationally with others. Therefore, many countries focus on bilingual education in order to compete on the international level.
In Spain, if a teacher conducts a bilingual curriculum then the entire lesson must be partially in English; the lesson is in either Spanish or English.  Bilingual education is a new development in Spain but especially in Ronda. In Spain, these programs run for a very short time; one year form primary school and three years for high school. There is also a shortage of qualified bilingual educators in Spain. The bilingual education programs in Spain have a different intention than those in the Unites States because their focus is to allow Spanish students to learn English at an enhanced level throughout their school years. The program’s main goal is to produce a generation of Spaniards able to compete in the international stage where English is acknowledged as the lingua franca (languages used as common or commercial tongues among peoples of diverse speech).
Spain welcomes English speaking children but with a different purpose. If the schools have more English speaking children, then the non-English speaking children will be able to retain and learn their second language more effectively. As stated in the article, “If they had their way they would increase the number of foreign students to give Spanish students exposure to the English language in the playground as well as the classroom.” Even though there is an increase of English speakers, bilingual schools are not able to offer 50/50 education. Some classes are lucky if they even achieve much more than minimal English instruction. Their goal for 2010/2011 was to increase this numbers from 25% to 30% of all education in English. In order to accomplish their goal, several teachers helped coordinate the curriculum mainly by those that knew the English meanwhile, the other teachers undertook English night courses at the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas.
Ronda is glad to offer a bilingual education curriculum and teachers are very delighted to teach it. Most promising, the students are responding positively to classes taught only in English. There seems to be a brighter future for the students in Ronda because bilingual education is supported by the mainstream. As stated in our textbooks, students succeed better in learning a second language if their efforts are seen positively.

Cristal's Manifesto

10 Point Manifesto to Fulfilling Teaching
by Cristal Carbajal Benitez

1.     Parent are partners in education, therefore, I will make sure I connect with my students’ parents’ or guardians from day one, if not before.
2.     I will use my students’ test scores NOT as a measure of their abilities, but as a measure of MY effectiveness as a teacher. I will take responsibility for my teaching methods and modify them to ensure all my students are learning.
3.     My students do not come to me as blank slates. They come to my classroom with large amounts of knowledge, and it is my job to use it to go deeper and further in their education by using what the already know.
4.     I will push my students to do better than their best, because they are capable of it.
5.     An organized space is needed for an organized mind. My classroom and lessons will be arranged in a way that distractions are at a minimum and learning is at a maximum.
6.     My job is not just to make sure I cover all of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, but also to teach my students the soft skills that will make them lifelong and self-regulated learners.
7.     We cannot expect people to run a race without knowing where the finish line is. For that reason, my students and I will decide what success looks like and what we expect to learn after a lesson
8.     My classroom will be a positive place where all of my students’ identities and cultures are acknowledged, respected, celebrated and investigated. Multicultural education will be a part of my teaching methods so that my students know that their experiences are important and worthy of sharing.
9.     I need to understand what my impact is on my students. Understanding how great of an impact I am making on my students’ lives will help me plan my course of action in regards to their education.
10.  I will make sure to stop and listen. Listen to my students to make sure they are learning and listen to my fellow teachers so I can learn from them and become a better educator.
